Fishing Foes

Tom Curtis / FreeDigitalPhotos.netLove to go fishing? Lounging by the lake is a relaxing summer activity, but remember it is very important to keep all fishing gear our of your pets reach. The smell from the tackle box can be quite tempting to an inquisitive dog, and the cats' curious and playful nature can spell trouble if they spot the fun looking flies, lures, and hooks. Hooks can get stuck very easily in the mouth or paws of your pet. Fishing line, when swallowed, can get caught in your pets' intestines, causing a surgical emergency.

If you are planning to bring along your dog on your next fishing trip, be sure to find our whether or not dogs are allowed at your destination. Look around before you cast to make sure that your pet or fellow humans are not in harms way.

Keep your dog on a leash; dogs running loose disturb wildlife and can get into trouble with other animals that may not be friendly towards your pet. Bite wounds are a common emergency at Animal Haven. Make sure your pets Rabies vaccination is up to date in case of such an encounter. Also be sure that Spot has plenty of fresh drinking water, and has a shady sopt to lie down in.
